Since 1291 all furnaces of Venice were transferred to Murano because of the fear of fire in the main city. Murano has since then become a world centre of glass production.

Gondoliers in their traditional outfit
Before the arrival of motorboats gondolas were needed to transport goods from the markets to the houses and palaces of Venice. Today a ride is part of the 'venetian experience'.

Market stalls near the Rialto Bridge
The main tourist trail moves between St. Mark's square, Rialto Bridge and Accademia Bridge.
No chance to miss the event of the season!
The tradition of Carnial in Venice began in the 11th century and reached its peak of popularity in the 18th century. Industrialisation left little leisure time and Carnival fell into deline, but was successfully revived in 1979.

One of the fassade mosaics from the 17th century
Another mosaic, showing the Resurrection of Christ
Everywhere on the Piazza St. Marco people would pose with costumes, not few as intricate as this.
The photo gives a good idea how people in costumes were surrounded by photographers. They posed for a while and then moved on to another area of St. Mark's square.
Costumes for all tastes. This one a bit more extravagant.
